Manager: Bobby Cox
Ball Park : Turner Field
Location: Atlanta, GA Turf: Grass Capacity: 50,069
The Atlanta Braves call Turner Field home to the south of downtown Atlanta. The baseball only stadium was constructed for the 1996 Summer Olympics and converted for baseball use for the Braves in 1997. The natural grass facility seats 50,091 and is situated at 755 Hank Aaron Dr. Atlanta, GA 30315.
Turner Field lies just south of the Interstate 75 & 85 junction with Interstate 20. For points north and south via I-75/85, take the Exit 246 to Fulton Street and turn east toward toward the Olympic Torch. Make a right onto Hank Aaron Drive from Fulton Street to Turner Field.
From the west take Interstate 20 east to Exit 58A (Turner Field / Capital Street). Turn left onto Fulton Street from the exit and make a right onto Hank Aaron Drive for the stadium.
Traveling from the east to Turner Field, drivers should take Interstate 20 west to Exit 56B (Windsor Street). From there take a right on Windsor, a left on Fulton Street, and a right on Hank Aaron Drive to the ball park.
When you win 14 straight division titles, you're going to win in just about every imaginable way, but even this was new for the Braves, who used 18 rookies in the 2005 season and still cruised to the second-best record in the National League.
Atlanta expected to be a contender again going into the season, but it was based on the formation of a veteran rotation headed by John Smoltz and Tim Hudson and the acquisition of closer Dan Kolb. Smoltz and Hudson performed as expected, but the rest of the rotation was decimated by injuries and Kolb was an abject failure, losing his job by May and not even making the playoff roster. In stepped a parade of young pitchers to hold the staff together, with unheralded trade acquisition Jorge Sosa providing the biggest boost. Sosa made 44 appearances, including 20 starts, and had a 2.55 ERA in 134 innings.
Injuries also hit the everyday lineup, with Chipper Jones leading the parade to the disabled list, but here again the farm system kept the team going. Outfielder Jeff Francoeur became a media darling for his performance (14 home runs in 70 games) and all-out style of play. Homegrown veterans Andruw Jones, Marcus Giles and Rafael Furcal were the anchors in the lineup, though, with Jones setting career highs with 51 homers and 129 RBIs and winning his eighth straight Gold Glove.
The Braves lost in the NL Division Series, dropping an epic 18-inning game to the Astros to lose the series, but unlike past seasons, this one still felt like a success. And with the core that's in place now (not to mention their track record), it would be crazy to bet against the Braves in 2006.
