Goalie Curtis Joseph kept Phoenix in playoff contention until midway through the season. The 38-year-old proved he still has something left in the tank and finished the year ranked ninth in the league with 32 victories, including the 400th of his NHL career.
Zbynek Michalek began the season as an unknown rookie, but led the team in ice time (22:49) and blocked shots (166) while scoring nine goals.
Unlike his younger brother Milan, Zbynek Michalek was not even drafted - let alone a •: first-rounder. But coach Wayne Gretzky sensed Michalek was a quiet talent during camp and gave him plenty of ice time to develop.
Center Steven Reinprecht played only 28 games for Phoenix after a Feb. 1 trade, but his playmaking skills made Shane Doan and Fredrik Sjostrom more effective.
