Anywhere but New York, the Mets' 2005 season would have been considered a success. A flawed team played hard all season and finished four games better than .500, the club's best record since 2000. But this is New York, so the club made like the Yankees in the offseason and brought in every big-name star it could find in an effort to return to the playoffs in 2006.
It's not as if the Mets hadn't made major moves for 2005, signing free agents Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez to go with emerging young stars Jose Reyes and David Wright. But the roster had plenty of flaws beyond that, and injuries to players like Mike Cameron and poor performance from Kaz Matsui and others meant that .500 was about the most the club could hope for. Wright led the Mets in most offensive categories, including a team-best on-base plus slugging percentage of .912.
Martinez showed he was far from done, winning 15 games, pitching 217 innings and finishing fourth in the National League with a 2.82 ERA. Tom Glavine also had a bounce-back season, pitching particularly well in the second half. The bullpen was much more troublesome, with Braden Looper proving an unreliable closer and no one else stepping forward to take the job.
So naturally, the Mets went out and signed Billy Wagner to solve that problem. They also grabbed Paul Lo Duca and Carlos Delgado in the Marlins' going-out-of- ; business sale to plug their other two big holes. So all the pieces are in place. All manager Willie Randolph has to do is fit them together.
