Manager: Joe Torre
Ball Park : Yankee Stadium
Location: Bronx, NY Turf: Grass Capacity: 57,478
"The Home of Champions", Yankee Stadium represents a mixture of classic design with modern amenities. Opened on April 18, 1923 and rennovated in the 1970s, the ball park seats 57,478. The venue lies in the Bronx across the Harlem River in the 10451 zip code.
To get to Yankee Stadium from points north of New York City take the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87) North to Exit 4 (149th street) or Exit 5 (155th Street). Interests from the south should take Exit 6 (161st Street) from I-87 south. I-87 meets the Triboro Bridge south of Yankee Stadium and the Cross-Bronx Expressway (I-95) to the north.
More than any year in recent memory, 2005 was the season the Yankees looked vulnerable. Yet there they were at the end of the season, 95 wins and a tie for the American League East title, their eighth straight division crown. Still, the season ended in disappointment with a five-game loss to the Angels in the Division Series.
The team got off to a slow start that had its many detractors cackling with glee, but New York slowly but surely worked its way back up the standings, ultimately ending up tied with Boston. (The tie was not broken because both teams qualified for the playoffs, though the Yankees went in as the division winners because of a 10-9 advantage in the season series.)
Third baseman Alex Rodriguez led the Yankees attack, batting .321 with an AL-high 48 home runs, though he will be remembered as much for his 2-for-15 performance in the playoffs as his MVP award. The team also got unlikely contributions from rookies, with Robinson Cano stepping in at second base and Chien-Ming Wang filling a crucial hole in the rotation. But, the Yankees would not have gotten as far as they did without another amazing season from closer Mariano Rivera, who had 43 saves and led all big league closers with a 1.38 ERA.
The biggest news of the offseason wasn't that the Yankees added to their roster — that happens every year now, so Johnny Damon can just join the conga line of stars — but that manager Joe Torre and general manager Brian Cashman will remain in place. That means there's no reason to think the Yankees will fall from their perch in 2006.
