The Roberto Clemente Bridge allows pedestrians to span the Allegheny River between downtown and the ball park.
The National League Central is home to two franchises that had 12 straight losing seasons coming into 2005, and both had payrolls of around $40 million. But while the Brewers went .500 and looked like a team on the way up, the Pirates tied for the worst record in the league with a cast of overmatched young players.
Second-year player Jason Bay has already become the cornerstone of the lineup, and he followed up his Rookie of the Year campaign with an even better year. He was the first Pirates player to start 162 games since Johnny Ray in 1982, and he batted .306 with 32 home runs, 110 runs and 101 RBIs to lead the Pirates in nearly every offensive category. Pittsburgh also broke in outfielders Chris Duffy and Nate McLouth, first baseman Brad Eldred and catcher Ryan Doumit, among 12 rookies who made their debuts in 2005.
The more significant rookie contributions came from the pitchers, and lefthander Zach Duke was 8-2 with a 1.81 ERA in 14 starts after coming up from Triple-A. Another lefthander, Paul Maholm, went 3-1 with a 2.18 ERA in six starts after coming up from the minors. The team's more established pitchers all had disappointing seasons. The 4.41 ERA of lefthander Dave Williams was the lowest among pitchers who made at least 20 starts.
The Pirates brought in several veterans to try to supplement the youngsters in the offseason, including Jeromy Burnitz, Sean Casey and Joe Randa, but the roster still lacks the frontline talent to contend in the Central. Another losing season would hardly be a surprise.
