The Giants got a look at the post-Barry Bonds era in 2005 - and the results weren't pretty. They had the first sub-.500 season since Brian Sabean took over as general manager in 1997 and saw a veteran team struggle at the plate and on the mound before giving way to rookie auditions by season's end.
Bonds had three operations on his knee between January and May, and he wasn't able to play until mid-September, when the Giants couldn't quite mount a last-ditch run at the playoffs. The hitters behind him, including Moises Alou, couldn't come close to replacing Bonds' production. Because the National League West was so weak, the Giants stayed in the playoff race deep into the season, and a deadline deal to obtain Randy Winn from the Mariners actually provided them with their best player. He batted .359 in 58 games after getting traded, including .447 with 11 homers in September.
The pitching staff was disappointing, with No. 1 starter Jason Schmidt and closer Armando Benitez both struggling with injuries. Schmidt took several months to work into shape and finished 12-7 with a 4.40 ERA. Benitez made just 30 appearances, though he did earn 19 saves in that limited action. The team got encouraging results from two young pitchers: Noah Lowry, who won 13 games with a 3.78 ERA, and Matt Cain, who came up from the minors for seven starts at the end of the season and compiled a 2.33 ERA in 46 innings.
The Giants will continue their push to win now as long as Bonds is on the roster, and to that end they tried to improve the bullpen in the offseason, as well as signing free agent Matt Morris to bolster the rotation. They know that if a healthy Bonds is in the middle of the lineup, they'll score enough runs.
