In Ralph Friedgen's first year ('01), I gave the Terps an excellent shot at having their first winning season in 6 years and getting to a bowl. The Terps did not disappoint, in fact they won the ACC Title outright despite being picked 7th in the league by the media. It was their first ACC Title since 1985 and first 10 win season since 1976. In 2002 I called for them to match the previous year's 10 win total but they started out 1-2 before winning 10 of their last 11 games including a 30-3 trouncing of Tenn in the Peach Bowl. In 2003,1 called for them to have their 3rd straight 10 win season. With 15 starters back they once again started slowly at 0-2 but went 10-1 down the stretch including demolishing WV in the bowl 41-7. They were one of just 5 teams in the country to have 10 or more wins in each season from 2001 -'03.2004 was Friedgen's first inexperienced squad with just 9 starters returning and after averaging 34.4, 32.2 and 31.2 ppg offense in his first 3 years, they slumped to just 17.7. Last year they were young again with just 9 seniors in the 2 deep and were the least experienced team in the ACC. Unfortunately the team had 3 close losses and finished with their 2nd consecutive 5-6 season. They led Clemson 24-14 in the 4Q, only trailed WV (finished 11-1)21-19 with 8:24 left, trailed #3 VT 7-3 at the half, led #9 Fla St 24-14 in the 3Q and were done in bya94 yd fumble return foraTDvsBC.They also hada265-186 yd edge vs NCSt but an IRfor aTD did them in. Former DC Gary Blackney did a fine job in fact, the ppg allowed in his 5 years was just 22.2,16.3,15.8,20.0 and 25.0 but retired after the season. This is the Fridge's most experienced team in 3 years. The defense has had just 4 and 5 returning starters the last 2 seasons but now has 7 back this year and plenty of talent and VHT's throughout the lineup. They will contend with Friedgen's 2003 defense (15.8 ppg, 308 ypg) as the best in the last decade. The schedule leaves the Terps little room for error as they have 5 road games vs teams that were in bowls last year and also have to host both Florida St and Miami, Fl.
