The players may come and go, but one thing stays consistent on Hawk Hill — winning. A year ago, the Hawks recovered from a dismal start to win 24 games and reach the championship game of the NIT. That makes three straight seasons — and four of the last five — with 23 or more wins. That's a legacy coach Phil Martelli hopes to continue.
"All I can do is focus on who we have here, and we have three (scholarship) seniors back with good experience who know how to put in the hard work we require and, most importantly, expect to win. That part of the program is important," says Martelli.
The most important off-season question revolved around center Dwayne Jones. He entered the NBA Draft but was devastated on draft night when his name was not called. Saint Josephs began the process to seek Jones' reinstatement, but that ended when the school learned Jones' family was negotiating a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The three seniors Martelli does welcome back are guards Dwayne Lee and Chet Stachitas and power forward Dave Mallon. Lee is a real key. After struggling early in the year as Jameer Nelsons replacement at the point, the 6'0" Lee hit his stride and carried his team along with him. Lee is an excellent pressure defender and began hitting clutch jump shots and free throws once league play began. Lee and Stachitas need to pick up the outside scoring punch that will be lost with Pat Carroll's departure. Carroll took 27.4 percent of his team's field goal attempts and nearly all of the clutch ones. Stachitas (50 threes) has good range on his jumper.
To be in the A-10 tide chase, the Hawks will need some rapid improvement from their three scholarship sophomores, and diey must get some contributions from dieir talented four-man recruiting class. Martelli and his staff out-recruited some big-time programs for many of these players, and now is the time to see the results. Sophomore point guard Abdulai Jalloh can back up Lee again, while rangy big man Pat Calathes and forward Rob Ferguson have the potential to be big scorers. "All three of our sophomores are ready and have to come forward, but that's why we recruited diem," Martelli says. "We're excited about all of the young talent we have, but it is die seniors who know how to win right away."
Leading die rookie class are forwards Ahmad Nivins and Alvin Mofu-nanya and swingman Jordan Fowler.
