It's amazing how a World Series championship can change expectations. The Red Sox made it back to the playoffs a year after breaking their long title drought, but a Division Series sweep at the hands of the White Sox left an empty feeling at the end of 2005. The feeling got worse as the front office fell apart and Boston got outflanked in offseason maneuvers.
The Red Sox offense was as potent as ever, leading the American League in batting and passing the 900-run mark for the second year in a row. MVP candidate David Ortiz led the way, hitting 47 home runs and seeming to deliver clutch hits every time the club needed one in the heat of the playoff drive. Manny Ramirez's attention seemed to wander, as usual, but he continued to rake at the plate, hitting 45 home runs.
The team's downfall, however, came with its pitching, which was marred by injuries and ineffectiveness. Two of the best pitchers of 2004 were virtually useless in 2005. Ace Curt Schilling was hurt much of the season and was not the same pitcher when he finally got on the mound, and closer Keith Foulke fell apart after battling a knee injury. Tim Wakefield was a rock in the rotation, pitching 225 innings, and Mike Timlin held the bullpen together, making 81 appearances with a 2.24 ERA.
The Red Sox set about building for another title run after the season ended, trading for Marlins ace Josh Beckett, but those plans were derailed when Theo Epstein stepped down as general manager. The Red Sox then lost centerfielder Johnny Damon to the Yankees, leaving a lot more questions than answers heading into 2006.
