Apparently Larry Bowa wasn't the only thing standing between the Phillies and the playoffs. Now Philadelphia will find out if Ed Wade was to blame.
The Phillies won 88 games in 2005, their highest total in a dozen years, and contended for the wild card until the final day of the season, but with a payroll approaching $100 million, the team was expected to reach the playoffs. So a year after Bowa was fired as manager, Wade was fired as GM. He built a team with a potent offense, but the starting pitching ultimately proved not to be of playoff quality. The bullpen was strong, with Billy Wagner, Ryan Madson and Ugueth Urbina proving to be an effective combination.
The most pleasant surprise in Philadelphia was the emergence of first baseman Ryan Howard, who won the National League Rookie of the Year award. Howard appeared blocked by Jim Thome, but the Phillies resisted trading him and were glad when he was available to step in after Thome went down with an elbow injury in July. Howard hit 22 home runs and had a .567 slugging percentage in 88 games. The offense also got a big boost from second baseman Chase Utley, who got a full-time job after Placido Polanco was traded to Detroit. Utley had an on-base percentage of .376 and also chipped in 28 home runs and 105 RBIs.
The Phillies were able to deal Thome in the offseason, bringing in White Sox centerfielder Aaron Rowand and a couple of pitching prospects, and they signed Tom Gordon to replace Wagner as the closer. They'll need more pitching help to get back into playoff contention, however.
